Ricky Rockenstire, 32, will serve a year in jail and pay restitution for Oakwood Cemetery vandalism

June 2, 2005TROY -- The 32-year-old man who with his stepson allegedly knocked wings and heads from angel statues in Oakwood Cemetery and damaged graves near the Uncle Sam burial site said he was mad at his marijuana dealer and just snapped.

Rockenstire told [Judge] McGrath he was angry and decided to take a walk through the cemetery, something he often did. He said he got angrier and then damaged seven to 10 stones.

Both Rockenstire and Thompson were charged with first-degree cemetery desecration after police found 50 gravestones and statues damaged around the monument to Samuel Wilson, the Troy meatpacker whose nickname of Uncle Sam grew into a national icon.
Police said the two also allegedly damaged the flagpole near the Uncle Sam site and burned a hole in the flag.
