WASHINGTON --Officials from the Bureau of Indian Affairs will visit the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe on Cape Cod next week in the final step before a decision is made this spring on the tribe's bid to win federal recognition.
The tribe, whose ancestors greeted the Pilgrims, has been seeking federal recognition since the 1970s and in 2001 sued the Department of Interior for a quicker review of their request.

"They will be there to check the numbers, to pore through the genealogy records to make sure everyone is a tribe member," Ferson said.
