Are You Master of Your Domain?

Dennis Forbes has done a study of domain-name availability, and finds that the top 10,000 surnames in the U.S. have already been registered as "dot coms."

This includes almost all the names in my American family tree, and most of my Canadian names as well. Many of the domains—like coolidge.com—are occupied by speculators, though some—like dunham.com—have legitimate tenants. I would have to rely on my Finnish surnames to secure some quality real estate on the Web: my great-grandparents are the only Tamlanders to have made it into the SSDI, and nobody has snatched up "Tamlander.com" yet.
