Scouting for a Free DNA Test?

Though I never advanced beyond Webelos, I retain a deep respect for the knot-tying, kerchief-wearing, duty-doing members of Boy Scouts of America. Now there's one more reason to sign your son up for a Camporee: free DNA testing.

As Megan Smolenyak2 reported last week, active BSA members who participate in a study by the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation will be given a coupon for free y-DNA testing through Relative Genetics. Even if your Scout doesn't want to join the SMGF study, he still can get a 26-marker DNA test at a significant discount.

Since participation in the study requires a pedigree running back to the 1800s, this would be a great way to get your sons interested in genealogy—and maybe put them on the path to a genealogy merit badge. At the very least, it'll teach them how to use mouthwash.
