C'mon, Just Six More Years!

Meng Qingrong and Meng Nishi of Dalian, in China's Liaoning Province, have been married for 80 years. He's 101, she's 100. Believe it or not, that's not even close to a record.

A Taiwanese couple, aged 103 and 102, had been married for 85 years in 2002 (she died in 2003). A couple from Kerala claimed in 2005 to have been married for 86 years. No word on whether either of these couples surpassed the 86-year union of Lazarus and Molly Rowe of Maine.

I've got a pair of cousins who are pushing their 82nd anniversary.

Wow! Does Guinness say they're the longest-married living couple? John and Emelia Rocchio held the record in 2005, but she died last June and he in August, and I don't know who has the record now.

I'll have to ask the great-grandson of theirs that I'm in contact with. I never heard anything else about it after the newspaper article. They are still fairly active and their memories are still surprisingly good for someone with 100 or so years worth of memories to soft through. Bill was able to give me a few scraps of information that helped me reconnect with a branch fo the family that hadn't been heard from since the 1920s.
