Old News Is Good News

The Library of Congress's Chronicling America project finally came online this afternoon. As I mentioned back in January, this phase offers digitized newspapers published between 1900 and 1910 in California, Florida, Kentucky, New York, Utah, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. They also have an excellent directory of American newspapers published since 1690, with info on repositories where copies may be found.

Wow! Thanks for this update about online newspapers at the Library of Congress, Chris!

I've been trying to find documentation of the marriage of a couple in San Francisco between 1900 and 1906, but marriage records in San Francisco prior to 1906 were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire.

I searched the San Francisco Call 1900-1910 and found a notice that, on 15 Jul 1903, a marriage license was issued to the couple I'm researching. Since the official records were destroyed, I can use this notice to substitute for the actual marriage license and certificate!

Chris

Cool! I'm not crazy about the interface, but I did manage to find one death notice I needed in a DC paper.
