Colorado Hides Vital Records

Colorado's searchable database of marriage and divorce records has been taken down as part of the state's war on hypothetical identity theft.

"Given the increasing threat from identity theft, we decided we should take that information to a more confidential level," Ronald Hyman, the state registrar of vital stastics [sic] told the Daily Camera.
According to the Camera, Hyman said his department hasn't gotten any reports of stolen identities, but since the database browsers allowed people to find information such as a mother's maiden name, the Web site was taken down. [Link]
While I applaud this effort to crack down on a nonexistent crime, it does nothing to help those poor Colorado kids whose mothers kept their maiden names or chose to hyphenate. They don't stand a chance.

Man, that's a ridiculous reason to take it down. Mother's maiden names? I noticed it was missing the other night. Since I live in Colorado, I used it frequently. I was in there twice, for my two marriages. I kept my "maiden name" both times that I married. How could you possibly connect Charlotte Coulter, my mother, with me, a Crook, just by looking at her marriage record? I'm not listed as her kid, because I wasn't born until years after her wedding. So how would anyone figure out my mother's maiden name from that database? Really weird.

I guess the next step is to destroy all newspapers that have printed wedding and engagement announcements.

Why stop there. Since many obituaries mention parents... LETS BURN ALL OBITUARIES!!

I'm glad I ordered my husband's great-grandparents' marriage records over a year ago. Just image what havoc would have been wreaked if Al-Quaida or an identity thief had used that 1907 marriage record to commit acts of terrorism or rip off some credit card company!
