This one may be trickier than it appears. When did Cab Calloway's father and paternal grandfather die?
In 1910, both Cab’s grandfather (Cabel I) and father (Cabel II) were living. In the 1920 census of Baltimore, Elizabeth Calloway is widowed. She is Cab’s grandmother. Cab’s mother is married to a John Fortnar or Fortuna. She appears to be the mother of a child who is 3 years and 5 months old whose father is John F. The Baltimore death index has the deaths of two Cabel Calloways between 1910 and 1920. One died on October 15, 1913 and the other on May 8, 1919. I assume the one who died first is Cab’s father because Cab’s mother appears to have been married to John F. before 1919.~Sharon
Nicely done! The Baltimore City Death Index is a great resource, so long as you don't mind hours of tedious browsing.Another clue that Cabell I died after Cabell II is this Baltimore city directory, which shows that "Cabell Calloway, Sr." was living at 1017 Druid Hill Ave. in 1914-15. This is the same address where Cabell I lived in 1910, and where his widow, Elizabeth, lived in 1920.
Thank you for those great infos. I'll post a note on my website dedicated to Cab Calloway III: www.thehidehoblog.com
