Genealogue Challenge #88

Annie Moore was the first one through the doors when Ellis Island opened in 1892, but someone else bought the first railroad ticket sold at the immigration station.

Who was she, how old was she, and where was she headed?

Drew Smith

From the Annie Moore article: "The first ticket sold by the railroad agents in the new building was purchased by Ellen King, on her way from Waterford, Ireland, to a small town in Minnesota."

On the Nevada's ship's passenger list, she appears as 21-year-old Ellie King, headed to Nebraska.

There are a lot of interesting articles here:

The 2 Ellen Kings that came into Ellis Island in 1892 were in May and October, not in January and neither was coming from Waterford Ireland.
An Irish Ellen King in the 1900 Minnesota census is: the Mother-in-Law of Wessie Amty, born Feb 1828, but the census shows that she came to this country in 1843, not 1892.

Still looking for age.....

It looks to me like the New York Times got it wrong on 2 Jan 1892. The three large ships that were first off loaded were the Nevada, the City of Paris and the Victoria. I didn't find an Ellen King headed to Minnesota. I found an Ellie King, age 21 from Ireland headed to Nebraska. Maybe they got it wrong?

Ellen King

The first ticket sold by the railroad agents in the new building was purchased by Ellen King,18, on her way from Waterford, Ireland, to a small town in Minnesota.

I think it's probable that "Ellen King" was the "Ellie King" on the manifest (she even appears just before Annie Moore on the Nevada's passenger list!). But was she bound for Minnesota or Nebraska? We know that she didn't settle on the Minnesota/Nebraska border.
