Is Obama Too Antarctic to Be President?

The publisher of Israel Insider believes that Barack Obama's birth certificate is a forgery.

It has become even more suspect with the revelation that variations of the certificate image were posted on the Photobucket image aggregation website -- including one listing the location of Obama's birth as Antarctica, one with the certificate supposedly issued by the government of North Korea, and another including a purported photo of baby Barack -- one of which has a "photo taken" time-stamp just two minutes before the article and accompanying image was posted on the left-wing Daily Kos blog. [Link]
This guy gives crackpot conspiracy theorists a bad name. The Daily Kos post is dated "Thu Jun 12, 2008 at 08:44:37 AM PDT," but the first comment on the post was left at "08:10:34 AM PDT"—some 32 minutes before the image was posted to Photobucket. Our friend in Israel neglected to notice that Kos "bumped" the post to the top of the main page by changing the time.

That said, I haven't yet heard Obama deny that he was born at the South Pole. Is he embarrassed of his Antarctic heritage?

The Boring Details of Barack's Birth

Daily Kos has published Barack Obama's birth certificate, nipping in the bud claims that "Obama was born in Kenya, that his middle name isn't 'Hussein', but 'Muhammad', and that his real name is 'Barry' and not 'Barack.'"

Now when is John McCain going to prove that his middle name isn't "Adolf" and that he wasn't born in Berchtesgaden?

Barack Related to Infamous Dick

Lynne Cheney says that her husband is related to Barack Obama.

In an interview on MSNBC Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Cheney said that in the course of researching her husband's genealogy for her new book, "Blue Skies, No Fences," she discovered that the two public figures share an ancestor eight generations ago.

"Think about this," Mrs. Cheney said. "This is such an amazing American story that one ancestor, a man that came to Maryland, could be responsible down the family line for lives that have taken such different and varied paths as Dick's and Barack Obama's." [Link]
By my count, it's more like ten generations back (assuming that Mareen Duvall is the shared ancestor). Two extra generations may not seem like much, but when it comes to Dick Cheney, it's always best to keep one's distance.

One Dunham Danced

Tim Agazio has the coolest name origin (even if it is just speculative). By way of comparison, my surname is an old English place name meaning "homestead by the hill," "estate on a hill," or "settlement on a hill." Tim's ancestors were named for holy warriors, mine for prime real estate.

The spelling is usually "Dunham," though the "Donham" spelling was sometimes used in the 18th century when my forebears lived in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and adjacent towns. When my ancestor, Moses Dunham, moved to Hartford, Maine, he took with him the "Dunham" spelling. When his brothers Thomas and James Thomas migrated to the nearby town of Hebron, they were denominated "Donham." It's hard to tell whether this was a deliberate choice (doubtful stories abound of men who changed the spelling of their surnames to distinguish themselves from siblings). Bill West of West in New England descends from a son of James Thomas Donham who readopted the "Dunham" spelling.

The Dunham name is neither rare nor common in the U.S. It became more common when a shady character named Jonathan Singletary began using it as an alias. Before absconding to New Jersey, he raised some hell in Plymouth.

Wheras Jonathan Dunham, alias Shingleterry, hath long absented himselfe from his wife and family, tho advised and warned by authoritie to repaire to them, and for some considerable time hath bine wandering about from place to place as a vagabond in this collonie, alsoe deseminating his corrupt principles, and drawing away another mans wife, following him vp and down against her husbands consent; and att last hee meeting with and accompanying a younge woman called Mary Rosse, led by inthewiasticall power, hee said hee must doo whatt shee bad him, and according did, both of them, on her motion, att the house of John Irish, att Little Compton, kill his dogg, against the declared will of the said Irish; and although hee put them out of his house, yett they would goe in againe; and according to theire antick trickes and foolish powers, made a fier in the said house, and threw the dogg vpon it, and shott of a gun seuerall times, and burnt some other thinges in the house, to the hazard of burning of his house and younge children, keeping the dores and not opening them to the said John Irish when he come with some of his naighbors to rescue the same; to the disturbance of his maties peace commaunded, and against the laws. [Records of the Colony of New Plymouth in New England (1856), 6:113f]
He was sentenced to be "publickly whipt att the post" and was booted from the colony. Among his descendants was Ann Dunham, the mother of Barack Obama.

The most famous person to bear my surname was a remarkable woman named Katherine Dunham. A pioneer of modern dance, she was the daughter of Albert M. Dunham, a dry-cleaner in Joliet, Illinois, and the granddaughter of John Dunham, a former slave who settled in Memphis after emancipation. If our paternal lines intersected, it was probably in some millennium long past. Katherine died last year, but her legacy lives on at the Katherine Dunham Centers for Arts and Humanities.

I should also mention Dunham Bootmakers, a company founded by three brothers from North Paris, Maine—just a stone's throw from my hometown of Greenwood. They were distant cousins of mine, but neglected to mention me in their wills.

Obama's Old Irish Home

Church of Ireland rector Stephen Neill says he has found Barack Obama's ancestral village in Ireland. It's a place called Moneygall in Co. Offaly.

"I would be convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that this is categorical evidence of Mr Obama's link to this part of the world," said the rector.

It was initially believed the would-be president's third great grandfather Fulmuth Kearney was the only one of his family to have sailed from Ireland to New York aged 19 in 1850. But the newly-uncovered records show other family members had in fact emigrated to America since the 1790s. [Link]
Update: Megan has more details on the search for Obama's roots. The records found by Canon Neill were the final piece of the puzzle she and her Ancestry.com cohorts had been working on since the Senator's Irish heritage was first revealed in March.

Candidate Accepts DNA Donations From Slave Owners

The genealogical muckraking continues. The Barack Obama pedigree I mentioned several weeks ago has caught the attention of The Baltimore Sun. They've used it to prove that some of Obama's ancestors owned slaves.

According to the research, one of Obama's great-great-great-great grandfathers, George Washington Overall, owned two slaves who were recorded in the 1850 Census in Nelson County, Ky. The same records show that one of Obama's great-great-great-great-great-grandmothers, Mary Duvall, also owned two slaves.
"The twist is very interesting," said Ronald Walters, a political scientist who is director of the African-American Leadership Institute at the University of Maryland, College Park. "It deepens his connection with the experience of slavery, even if it deepens it on a different side of the equation." [Link]
Overall and Duvall's refusal to come forward and answer these charges only worsens the situation for Obama. If they want their descendant to become president, they need to learn how to handle the press.

Angling for the Cherokee Vote?

I'd like to be able to claim Barack Obama as a cousin, but I can't. His mother's maiden name was Dunham, but she inherited it from a guy named Jonathan Singletary alias Dunham who DNA tests show wasn't related to my line. According to family friend Julia Suryakusuma, Mama Obama's complexion belied her native roots.

“You know Ann was really, really white,” smiled Suryakusuma, looking through the album, “even though she told me she had some Cherokee blood in her. I think she just loved people of a different skin colour, brown people.”

Dunham was from Wichita, Kansas, but her parents moved to Hawaii in search of a better life. According to Obama, a distant ancestor was a “full-blooded Cherokee”. [Link]
No evidence was found by William Addams Reitwiesner of Cherokee heritage in Obama's pedigree.
