A Neonatal Beatle

Kylie McCartney gave birth on November 12 to a son, whom she named "Paul."

The 26-year-old changed her last name from Presley 20 years ago, along with her dad Dave and 27-year-old sister Caroline who both chose a surname of Lennon.
Kylie and Paul returned home from St Michaels Hospital in Bristol on November 15 to live with her dad, whose full name is David John Paul George Ringo Lennon. [Link]

Celebrity Sells

An Ancestry.co.uk survey shows that 20% of adults in Britain are researching the histories of their houses.

The report said a number of urban myths are fuelling the interest, such as a suggestion that John Lennon lived in a yet-to-be identified house in Blackpool and a rumour that Bob Dylan once had a house in Crouch End, north London. [Link]
The head of an estate agency adds that having a celebrity among its past owners can increase a home's value by up to 10%. If the celebrity was a serial killer, subtract 10%.

The SSDI Sometimes Lies

Despite being listed in the Social Security Death Index, David Rotolo insists that he's still alive. (Update: As of May 2007, he's no longer listed.) The SSA blames the mixup on the VA.

Veterans Affairs spokesman Ryan Steinbach said his agency had, in fact, marked Rotolo as dead in February 2005. It listed his date of death as Sept. 7, 2002.
He said the VA has no doubt Rotolo is who he claims to be and that he is alive.

"We're very sure that's the guy," Steinbach said. "We're very sorry for the time we did have him deceased and any problems it may have caused him or his family."

Steinbach said he hoped the error didn't cause Rotolo "any undue pain or harm."

"We can say this," Steinbach said. "He now has something in common with both Mark Twain and Paul McCartney." [Link]

And If You Could Bring Along Paul McCartney...

From Cheshunt and Waltham (U.K.) Mercury of Nov. 4, 2005:

Sir Cliff, you may be one of the family!

LEGENDARY singer Cliff Richard, who grew up in Cheshunt, could have a long-lost relation in Waltham Abbey.

Pensioner June Ive and her daughter Linda Square are trying to piece together whether the pop star, who lived for many years in Hargreaves Close, Bury Green, is, in fact, one of their kin.

The pair believe the connection with Sir Cliff, who recently returned to the borough for a visit, stems from the superstar's real surname - Webb.

June says she would like Cliff to have a look at her great-uncle William Webb in the black and white wedding photo.

"If Cliff could look at the photo, he could say yes or no," she said. "I would like to know. It would just clear it up."

More Censuswhacking

In my first experiment in censuswhacking, I tried to find individuals or families in the 1880 census each with a unique first or last name. This time, I've looked for unique and unusual combinations of first and last names.

Fictional characters: Clark Kent (there were four Lois Lanes in 1880), Marcia Brady, and Harry Lime (for those who remember the Third Man). There was also a Chris Kringle, whose first name was undoubtedly misspelled by the enumerator.

Musicians: Paul McCartney, Hank Williams, and Patsy Cline.

Actors: Richard Gere, James Spader, and Linda Lovelace (really).

Literary figures: George Orwell and Virginia Woolf.

It is rather disturbing to find that there were four women in 1880 named Fanny Large, and two named Fanny Grumbles. Fortunately, there was only one Fanny Poker then living in America.

One wonders if the Nice Dame living in Mississippi ever met the Mean Beavers living in Alabama.

Harry Chin lived in Louisiana, while Harry Knee lived with his folks in Pennsylvania. (Before you ask, there were five Harry Butts spread across the country.)
